I love my little town of Boseong!
When I found my placement on where I will be living and
teaching in Korea (almost a year from now), the first thing I did was Google
Boseong. In my research all I found out about was that it was a small country
town known for their Green Tea Plantation and some news article about a murder
that happened a few years back. So, if you get my point I had no idea where I would
be living, if I was going to like living in the country or what really I was
getting myself into.
I have been living in Boseong for almost a year now and I
can tell you that I would not have wanted to live in any other place than here.
You all know how much I love my school, so I will not talk about that, but do you
know how much I love my town? I am not a person who likes to sit around and
hibernate, so with every chance I get I go into town whether it is to get a few
things at the stationary store, getting food at the grocery store or restaurant,
or if is to just go to my coffee shop to get out of the house. Through my year living here, I have established
a relationship with a lot of the people in the community. It brings me joy
every time I pass the Seven Eleven man, when I walk past him on my way towards
home as we greet each other bowing saying hello in Korean and smiling or when I
walk into Paris Baguette and I am greeted by familiar faces. It is little
interactions like these that I love my little town of Boseong. Another reason
that I love my town is because people here are proud of their town. Yes, we are
known for our Green Tea, so let us put green tea in everything and let’s have a
festival to showcase it.
This past weekend was the Boseong Green Tea Festival. It was
such a great experience to see it as an outsider but also to be a part of it. It
was such a strange feeling to have so many tourist and foreigners to be in my
town but it was also super exciting and it made me even more proud and thankful
for my little town. It was quite funny to see foreigners hanging out in Boseong
on a Friday night because like they found out quickly there is not much of a
night life in my town.
Saturday was the day of my dance competition. I had to meet
my group early in the morning to practice and then we took the free tour bus
for the people who live in Boseong (another reason I love my town, they treat us
nicely). Our performance was at one, this is also the same time the competition started, so that meant we were the first ones up, yikes! The crowd was pretty big and yes it was a competition so there were judges.
I was a lot more nervous than I thought I was going to be. It was all the waiting in the back of the stage, that I think is when my nerves got the best of me. Once we were up, I had butterflies. I was a bit shaky in the beginning but slowly got my confidence and groove back and nailed it towards the end. I also had a wonderful group of friends cheering me on so that was fun to see them out in the audience.
I am not sure what we placed, if at all because there were 32 groups performing. I didn't stick around to find out the results. Overall, it was not about the competition or the prize it was about doing something crazy like this that I never would have thought that I would be doing. I was able to bond with the other ladies in my dance class and was able to feel like part of the community. This experience was a blast and if you ask me if you will be seeing me in any other Ajumma dance performances? I will just have to tell you, I have done it once and now I am a pro, why not do it again? haha
